Punjab Assembly Makes History with Session Focused Solely on Minorities

Punjab Assembly Hosts Historic Session Dedicated to Minority Rights
LAHORE (Dunya News) – In a groundbreaking move, the Punjab Assembly has dedicated an entire session to addressing the concerns and rights of minorities for the first time in Pakistan’s history. This special session, which is currently in progress, is being observed by ambassadors from several countries, reflecting its significance on both national and international stages.
Commitment to Equality and Inclusion
Speaking to the media outside the Punjab Assembly, Minister for Minorities Ramesh Singh Arora emphasized the importance of equality as enshrined in Pakistan’s constitution. He highlighted that the constitution guarantees equal rights to every citizen, regardless of their religious background. Arora praised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her strong commitment to minority rights, stating that her actions have shown that minorities hold a special place in her heart. Arora, who has made history as the first Sikh minister in the Punjab cabinet since 1947, reiterated that Pakistan is a nation that represents and embraces diversity, including Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians.
Honoring the Legacy of Quaid-e-Azam
The session also coincides with the annual observance of National Minority Day on August 11, a day officially recognized by the government since 2009. This day serves as a reminder of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision, particularly his speech to the legislature on August 11, 1947. Just days before Pakistan’s independence, Jinnah assured the protection of the rights of non-Muslims in the newly established country, underscoring his commitment to religious tolerance and inclusivity. The dedication of this session to minorities not only honors Jinnah’s legacy but also reaffirms Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the rights of all its citizens.
