Pakistan Voices Support for Bangladesh, Urges Peaceful Return to Stability

Pakistan Expresses Hope for Stability Amid Bangladesh’s Political Shift

Pakistan expressed solidarity with the people of Bangladesh on Wednesday, following the dramatic end of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule after days of violent protests. The Foreign Office (FO) conveyed Pakistan’s hope for a “peaceful and swift return to normalcy,” as the country faces a pivotal moment in its political history. The protests, initially sparked by public sector job quotas favoring veterans’ families, quickly escalated into a widespread movement against Hasina’s government, leading to her resignation and escape to India. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is expected to lead a caretaker government, following calls from student protest leaders.

Pakistan Praises Bangladesh’s Resilience Amidst Turmoil

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar expressed Pakistan’s support for the people of Bangladesh, commending their determination in opposing a regime plagued by corruption. He emphasized that Bangladesh’s issues stemmed from internal divisions, hatred, and an unjust quota system rather than economic conditions. Tarar voiced optimism for Bangladesh’s future, hoping that the nation would soon return to normalcy and continue its path toward prosperity. His remarks came after more than 400 deaths were reported due to clashes between security forces and protesters, culminating in the military’s withdrawal of support for Hasina.

Bangladesh’s Military Takes Control as Interim Government Announced

The political crisis reached a turning point on Monday when Bangladesh’s army chief, General Wakeruz Zaman, declared the formation of an interim government. This announcement followed the military’s decision to turn against Hasina, who fled to India amidst the escalating unrest. The following day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament, aligning with the demands of student leaders and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), which is calling for elections within three months. In a significant development, Hasina’s longtime rival, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, was also released from years of house arrest.
