Combating Climate Change: President Zardari Highlights Importance of Tree Planting on National Tree Planting Day

President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized on Sunday that Pakistan is one of the countries most severely impacted by climate change and global warming. Speaking at the annual monsoon tree-planting campaign at Bilawal House in Karachi, Zardari underscored the urgent need to expand the nation’s forest cover to combat the adverse effects of these environmental challenges. National Tree Planting Day, observed on August 18 during the monsoon season, serves as a crucial opportunity to rally national efforts in this regard.
Urgent Call for Public Participation in Tree Planting
Zardari passionately called on the public to actively engage in the monsoon tree-planting initiative, stressing the importance of planting more trees to counteract the escalating effects of climate change and rising global temperatures. He specifically encouraged the youth and civil society to play a pivotal role in expanding the country’s green cover. Reflecting on past efforts, Zardari mentioned the tree-planting campaign launched during his wife Benazir Bhutto’s first term as prime minister, which included planting neem trees across Pakistan. He noted that with the increasing temperatures, the need to plant trees is more pressing than ever before.
Success in Mangrove Restoration and Future Plans
Zardari also praised the successful restoration of mangrove forests in Sindh, where millions of acres have been replanted as part of the effort to restore natural habitats and combat coastal erosion. He reaffirmed his commitment to further expanding mangrove forests and intensifying tree-planting activities across the country. The president highlighted the environmental benefits of neem trees, particularly their ability to improve air quality, provide shade, and naturally repel mosquitoes. He urged all sectors of society to participate in this critical tree-planting campaign to help reduce temperatures, increase greenery, and expand the nation’s forested areas.
Expanding Forest Cover for a Sustainable Future
In his address, Zardari reiterated the vital role that expanding forest cover plays in mitigating the effects of climate change. By increasing the number of trees, Pakistan can not only improve air quality and reduce temperatures but also create a healthier environment for future generations. Zardari’s call to action aims to unite the nation in a collective effort to plant trees and protect the environment. He urged every citizen to recognize their responsibility in contributing to a greener, more sustainable Pakistan.
